As a Metis artist, Heather Shillinglaw-MacMillan had always worked with notions, sewing, and hand sewing into her artwork. When her husband discovered that a sewing store was available for sale, Shillinglaw-MacMillan was inspired by the benefits of the business within the Indigenous community. For example, industrial sewing machines can be used to make teepees while other sewing machines can be used when working with leather. "The exciting opportunities that you have where you can sew anything you can imagine. There is a combination of different artists and craft people that sell and market all kinds of products. We have leather purses that people have made, embroideries, and quilting."
