Summary
The Louis Riel Commemorative Walk is being held by the Metis Nation of Alberta on Nov. 13 in Sherwood Park, Alta. It honors Riel’s relatives and friends who carried his casket in the winter to St. Boniface in 1885. Louis Riel had been hanged for treason in Regina on Nov. 16, 1885.
The walk will be the official start of Métis Week which runs Nov. 13 to Nov. 18. It celebrates the contributions of Métis in Canada with the Edmonton City Hall flag raising, Louis Riel Commemorative Ceremony at the Alberta Legislature, MNA open house, the Métis Urban Housing 35th Anniversary Gala, seniors’ and veterans’ teas. These events commemorate Louis Riel’s place and standing in Canadian history.
