The memory of late Thelma Chalifoux, Métis leader and activist, will be honored by the University of Alberta which announced it will name one of two new student residences after the former Canadian senator.
“We are so excited for this naming,” said Sharon Morin, Chalifoux’s daughter.
“She was a great lady and is the perfect role model for the first-year students. She loved young people and being around them.”

The university’s board of governors announced it will name the other new residence Nîpisîy House, based on the Cree word for willow, a plant that is used to build sweatlodges.
Both names are meant to honor Indigenous history and the university’s location on Treaty 6 territory. Thelma Chalifoux Hall and Nîpisîy House will be open to students this fall.
The names were decided after a months-long process, with feedback from students and input from the campus community.
A naming committee received more than 100 name suggestions, with Chalifoux nominated twice.
