Summary
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organization that presents the Oscars, has extended invitations to membership to 928 artists and film executives and iconic actress and Native rights activist Tantoo Cardinal is among the invitees.
The invitations have been sent to those who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2018.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at invitation-only receptions in the fall.
Cardinal is a film and television actress from Alberta. Her films include Dances with Wolves, Black Robe, Legends of the Fall, and Smoke Signals. Television work includes North of 60. She is a member of the Order of Canada. In 2017, she was named the winner of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television's Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement.
Her handprints have been set in cement on the Aboriginal Walk of Fame in Edmonton.
Cardinal is of Métis descent and was born in Fort McMurray, Alta.
