Indigenous musician/rapper Taboo, best known as a member of the Grammy Award winning hip hop group the Black Eyed Peas is scheduled to perform at the opening ceremony of the 2017 North American Indigenous Games scheduled for July 16 in Toronto.
A parade of more than 5,000 athletes, coaches and mission staff will launch the games, and the Aviva Centre will play host to stunning live Indigenous performances in a celebration of North American Indigenous culture.
Of Mexican-American and Native American ancestry, Taboo is known for his fun and infectiously upbeat anthems, including his smash hit “The Fight”.
The celebration will continue all week in the cultural festivals located at York University and McMaster from July 17 to July 21.
Indigenous musical performances includ: Chris Derksen, Crystal Shawanda, Digging Roots, DJ Shub, Genevieve Fisher, Kathia Rock, Midnight Shine, Mimi O’Bonsawin, Shibastik, and Tanya Tagaq.
The Toronto 2017 NAIG Cultural Festivals presented free of charge, and open to the public daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with evening performances beginning at 8 p.m. each night.
Toronto 2017 NAIG is expected to be the largest sporting and cultural gathering of Indigenous Peoples in North America. Hosting more than 5,000 participants, in 14 sport categories, competition will take place within sixteen (16) world-class venues located across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including the Region of Hamilton and Six Nations of the Grand River.
