Portage College receives funding to help meet Indigenous needs

Construction of a Water and Wastewater Simulator lab at Portage College will deliver hands-on training in water management and address the critical need for water operators in northeastern municipalities, First Nations and Métis settlements.

It will receive $752,460 through the federal government’s Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund.

Portage College, in Lac La Biche, will also receive a federal investment of $210,000 to modernize technological infrastructure to support future teaching and learning opportunities in rural and Indigenous communities.

These two project are part of more than $1.6 million to support students’ educational needs by improving technological infrastructure and upgrading facilities at Portage College.

In total, four colleges with 12 projects will receive $21.78 million from the provincial and federal governments.

Alongside Portage College, funding will go to Keyano College in Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie Regional College, and Lethbridge College.

“Supporting our colleges with these significant infrastructure investments will ensure Albertans have access to state-of-the-art learning opportunities and create much-needed jobs to stimulate and grow our economy,” said Advanced Education Minister Marlin Schmidt, in a new release.
