Treaty 6 Grand Chief Willie Littlechild hopes more public institutions take the lead of MacEwan University to permanently raise the Métis Nation and Treaty 6 flags on campuses across the entire province.

Following a special ceremony at the downtown Edmonton University on Wednesday, Littlechild said he also hopes when students enter through the main entrance and see the flags, they take a moment to ask themselves what they can do to help in the reconciliation process.

A treaty organization that represents 49 First Nation communities in northern Ontario, including one with a close connection to the iconic singer, says it is mourning the death of Canadian musician Gord Downie. The Tragically Hip frontman died Tuesday night at age 53 from an aggressive and incurable form of brain cancer called glioblastoma.

His Secret Path project highlighted the death of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Ojibway boy who died from hunger and exposure after trying to find his way home, on foot, from the Cecilia Jeffrey Indian Residential School in Kenora, Ont. in 1966.

An Indigenous health centre will be the beneficiary of nearly $57,000 in funds raised by an annual walkathon put on by Toronto's Hindu community. For the last 21 years, Sanatan Mandir Cultural Centre has organized a walkathon to raise money, which is then donated to a different charity each year.

This year, Anishnawbe Health Foundation in Toronto was the chosen beneficiary, in what turned out to be the group's most successful walkathon yet.

Officials with CN Rail said crews were working to clean up a pair of train derailments in central Alberta late Tuesday afternoon – and by later in the day, rail service on one track had resumed, while the cleanup was still underway on the other. There were no spills, leaks of dangerous goods or injuries in this incident. CN said winds in the area at the time of the derailment were about 120 kilometres per hour.

Less than an hour after that incident, a westbound train derailed west of Wainwright. Thirteen train cars derailed as the train crossed CN Rail’s Fabyan Bridge. No spills, leaks or injuries were reported in connection to that derailment.
