Looking for gifts to exchange between grand chiefs, Edmonton mayor

The call is going out for the next gifts to be exchanged at this year’s Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day. The gifts will be presented to the outgoing grand chief, current grand chief and the mayor of Edmonton and are a symbol of their commitment to collaboration, respectful dialogue and exploring shared opportunities.

Anyone living within Treaty No. 6 territory (in and around Edmonton), both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, is eligible to submit a fine and decorative art piece. This can include drawings, paintings, photography, small sculpture, print-makings, folk art, and/or traditional handicrafts, or any combination.

The competition is open to amateur and seasoned artists.

Judging will be done in three categories—child, youth and adult–by a panel of Elders and artists. The winner in each category will receive $500.

This year’s theme is “As long as the sun shines, the waters flow, and the grass grows.” Artists and hobbyists are encouraged to create pieces in the spirit of celebrating local First Nations’ achievements and contributions.

Submission deadline is Aug. 4.

The fifth annual Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day will take place Aug. 18.
