The winner of the 2018 Chief David Crowchild Memorial Award is Shawna Morning Bull, manager of business development for Community Futures Treaty 7. She was presented the award by Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi June 20. Morning Bull is also a board member of the Piikani Nation.
The award, given by the Calgary Aboriginal Urban Affairs Committee, honours the efforts and contributions of a person, group or organization (Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal) who have:
- Created bridges of understanding through cross-cultural experiences between Indigenous and non-Indigenous cultures within Calgary
- Created within Canadian society an understanding of the uniqueness and value of Aboriginal culture
- Encouraged or supported Indigenous people in the areas of education, employment and training
“I was really humbled and really honored to win such an award,” said Morning Bull. She said Chief David Crowchild was such a trailblazer. “And you know he was a man before his time.”
As part of Community Futures, Morning Bull works with Treaty 7 bands, assisting with small business development. She sits on a number of economic development boards.
Upon hearing she would be presented the award, Morning Bull said she was in shock, and overjoyed.
