Connect with Métis tradition and culture this weekend Aug. 25 to 27 and immerse yourselves in family fun activities with Voyageur Days at Metis Crossing (12 km south of Smoky Lake on Secondary Highway 855), located along the North Saskatchewan River.

Wally Desjarlais of CFWE-FM spoke with Duncan Daniels about the event. Daniels said there are some new and exciting offerings for the public. The Voyageur experience is especially interesting.

There are three programs under the heading. One is called the Victoria Trail Voyageur Experience where people can work with a weaving loom to help create the Infinity Métis sash, paddle in an authentic Métis canoe to Victoria Settlement (you can even earn your Voyageur Certificate) and travel back in time to the fur trade, welcomed to Fort Victoria which was established as a Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post in 1862.

There is also a four-hour experience, starting at Metis Crossing.

You can camp at the crossing over the weekend and that’s where the Voyageur Days are happening. Learn to jig (Rockin’ Fiddle will provide the entertainment) or enjoy a bison bannock burger and take part in Voyageur Games or enter the horseshoe tournament.
