A candlelight vigil is being planned in Vancouver in honor of Barbara Kentner, 34, who died from her injuries July 4 after being hit by a trailer hitch thrown from a vehicle on Sunday, Jan. 29 in Thunder Bay, Ont.

It has been reported that four young people were in the car when a man leaned out the front passenger window and tossed a heavy object at Barbara and her sister Melissa Kentner as they walked.

Melissa heard “I got one,” as she turned to see her sister bent over with a trailer hitch beside her, it having hit Barbara in the stomach. It had ruptured Barbara’s small intestine. Barbara suffered until her death five months later; doctors were unable to repair the damage.

The man who threw the trailer hitch, Brayden Bushby, is facing an aggravated assault charge.

The vigil will take place tonight at 7:30 p.m. and hosted on the traditional Coast Salish territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations at the Commercial-Broadway Skytrain station on Commercial Drive in East Vancouver.

While some candles will be provided, people are being encouraged to bring their own to this “peaceful and prayerful gathering to honor the life and resilience of Barbara Kentner.”

The vigil will coincide with the date of her funeral, say organizers.
