The Aboriginal Multi Media Society of Alberta (AMMSA), publisher of Windspeaker.com and owner operator of CFWE-FM, is pleased to announce that Stefanie Joe of the Champagne and Ashihik First Nations (Yukon) is this year’s recipient of the 2017 Joe P. Cardinal Bursary.

The bursary is named for the late Elder, AMMSA board member and leader who believed communications was key to a greater understanding between people and cultures. The bursary is awarded to an Indigenous student to further their education in communications and/or media.

Stefanie Joe is attending the University of Calgary to complete a Bachelor Degree in Communication and Media Studies. She previously completed a two-year diploma from SAIT (with honors) in Journalism and was nominated the valedictorian of her class.

Her application letter describes a passion for Indigenous issues in Canada. Her goal is to “conserve Indigenous culture by recording the stories of our elders.”

Starting in her hometown of Whitehorse, “I hope to be able to travel to all of the Indigenous communities throughout Canada with the goal of cultural conservation.”

She plans to continue her contributions as a freelance writer to the Residential School Magazine while attending school.

Cardinal was a well-known Elder, often in demand to share his wisdom and knowledge. He contributed to Windspeaker.com’s Buffalo Spirit pages with information about his early life and traditional teachings as a “bush Cree” person and member of Saddle Lake nation: http://www.windspeaker.com/teachings/elder-joe-cardinal-in-his-own-words/
