Found Human Remains Identified as Missing Person Johnny Kootenay

Update Sept. 26, 2018: 2 p.m. MT

The Cochrane RCMP have determined that the human remains located on the Morley Reserve on April 13, 2018 are those of Johnny Calvin Kootenay.  Johnny’s family had reported him as missing to the Cochrane RCMP on December 22, 2017.  The RCMP and Johnny's family have been actively searching for Johnny ever since.  The Cochrane RCMP have notified the Kootenay family of the determination and have engaged the services of the Cochrane and Area Victim Services to assist the family during this difficult time.

“As investigators you always hold out hope that he would be found alive and well” said Constable Kary Moore with the Cochrane RCMP “every possible sighting and tip was investigated with the hopes that he would just show up one day.”

Circumstances surrounding Johnny’s disappearance and subsequent death are still under investigation by the Cochrane RCMP General Investigation Section.

Further details will be released when available and if in the public interest.

 

Cochrane, Alta. RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in locating 56-year-old Johnny Calvin Kootenay. Kootenay has not been seen by his family since Dec. 11. 

Kootenay was last seen walking on Highway 1a between Morley and Cochrane.  Kootenay is known to frequently pan handle in and around the Cochrane area.

Johnny Kootenay is described as being:

  • Native Male
  • 5 foot 6 inches tall
  • 160 pounds
  • pock marked face
