Garrett Pilon is likely still in a celebratory mood today.
That’s because Pilon, a 25-year-old Métis forward from Kindersley, Sask., is a member of the Hershey Bears, which captured the American Hockey League (AHL) championship on June 21.
Pilon and his teammates were able to hoist the league’s Calder Cup after posting a 3-2 overtime victory against the host California-based Coachella Valley Firebirds in the seventh and decisive game of the championship final.
Pilon collected 10 points (four goals and six assists) in the Pennsylvania-based Bears’ 20 playoff matches this season.
He was the overtime hero for the Bears on June 17 as he scored the lone goal in Hershey’s 1-0 victory in Game 5 of the AHL finals.
Pilon, who played the majority of his junior career with the British Columbia-based Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League, was selected by the Washington Capitals in the third round of the 2016 National Hockey League’s Entry Draft.
But he has only played three NHL games with the Capitals in his career. He has spent the majority of his five-season pro career toiling with the Bears.
The Bears have now won 12 AHL championships.
