Indigenous players to square off in Stanley Cup championship final

The Stanley Cup finalists have been decided.

The Vegas Golden Knights and the Florida Panthers will do battle for the National Hockey League’s top prize.

The one certainty is that one Indigenous player will be celebrating a Stanley Cup championship next month.

That’s because the Golden Knights’ roster includes defenceman Zach Whitecloud, a member of Sioux Valley Dakota Nation in Manitoba.

And the Panthers’ roster features Brandon Montour, a blueliner who is from the Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario.

Whitecloud and his Vegas teammates punched their ticket to the NHL’s championship series thanks to a convincing 6-0 triumph over the Dallas Stars on Monday May 29.

With that victory the Golden Knights captured their best-of-seven Western Conference final series in six matches.

As for Montour and the Panthers, they’ve known they would be in the fight for the Stanley Cup since May 24, when they downed the Carolina Hurriances 4-3 and swept their best-of-seven Eastern Conference final in four contests.

The best-of-seven Stanley Cup final begins Saturday June 3 in Vegas, and the Golden Knights will also host Game 2 on June 5.

The Panthers will host Games 3 and 4 on June 8 and June 10.
