For members of the Haudenosaunee squad their gold-medal aspirations at the world men’s field lacrosse championships came to an end on June 29.
But the Haudenosaunee club can still capture some hardware at the tournament, which wraps up on Saturday in San Diego.
The Haudenosaunee team will battle Australia in the bronze-medal match, set for 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
The Haudenosaunee entry was relegated to the battle for third place when it was defeated 12-7 by Canada in the semi-final contest on Thursday.
Canada will square off against the United States in the gold-medal match, set for 4 p.m. Pacific Time Saturday.
The Americans advanced to the championship final by trouncing Australia 11-2 in their semi-final tilt on Thursday.
The Haudenosaunee team will be looking for its third consecutive third-place finish at the tournament. It ended up winning its first medal at the 2014 event staged in Denver. And it also captured the bronze at the 2018 championships in Israel.
The Haudenosaunee squad posted a 2-2 round-robin record at this year’s event. It registered victories against England and Australia, but was downed by Canada and the U.S.
The club then won its first two playoff contests, 13-3 over Hong Kong and 10-5 against Japan.
The Haudenosaunee entry is considered the favourite heading into its bronze-medal tilt. It downed Australia 10-6 in its final round-robin game this past Sunday.
