The City of Edmonton is looking for a dynamic and passionate Communications Coordinator to join our team! In this role, you will play a key part in advancing Truth and Reconciliation initiatives by collaborating with the City Manager's Office and the Indigenous Relations Office. You will develop compelling content across various platforms, including social media, newsletters and events, to amplify the reach and impact of our reconciliation efforts. This position also involves building strong relationships with Indigenous communities, partner organizations, and community groups through outreach and engagement activities. What will you do?

  • Create videos, take photos, and develop written and other visual materials that promote and inform key audiences about reconciliation initiatives/activities.
  • Build a suite of storytelling resources for use in materials (e.g. videos, photos, key messages)
  • Support education, outreach, and engagement activities with Indigenous partner organizations and community groups by attending and profiling events and being an on-the-ground communications resource
  • Develop written and visual (i.e digital) content for social media, web pages, reports, and other products that capture and elevate the story of the impact of reconciliation efforts
  • Build respectful relationships with Indigenous communities and Elders, and sustain and maintain those relationships long-term
  • Develop and implement integrated communications plans and informative material involving cross-functional and cross-departmental teams
  • Draft and proof copy for news releases, public service announcements, backgrounder documents, collateral materials, newsletters, advertising, key messages, speaking notes, council reports, annual reports and other communications materials
  • Coordinate revision, approvals, production and distribution of communication materials (e.g., print, posters, leaflets, brochures, guides, newsletters and advertisements) and liaise with suppliers and colleagues to ensure products meet objectives and specifications, on time and within budget

 

Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2 year post-secondary diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Marketing, Social Justice or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a non-profit communications or corporate communications public relations, public affairs, public information role, or minimum of two years of experience working in Indigenous Relations or a related area, ideally within a large complex organization.

 

Assets:

  • Experience in communications at a complex organization
  • Degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Lived experience and knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and worldview

 

Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of and/or experience working with Indigenous communities and on reconciliation initiatives (including knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action, the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Calls for Justice, and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People)
  • Skilled at capturing photos, video, and other digital media, including ability to edit and post-process digital media for use on social media and in other communications materials
  • Knowledge of, and experience, diversifying how stories are told; introducing creative and innovative approaches that capture diverse perspectives with concepts like equity, inclusion, anti-racism, reconciliation, and GBA+ in mind
  • Appreciation of the diverse Indigenous peoples in Edmonton and the cultural importance of storytelling and oral tradition, language and cultural expression
  • Experience broadening reach and audience of media, including relationships within and/or awareness of various Indigenous media channels would be considered an asset
  • Strong storytelling abilities and a proven ability to identify and promote stories in all communication materials
  • Working knowledge of communications, marketing, advertising, media, social media and design coordination, event planning and print production
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to establish effective and inclusive working relationships with staff at all levels and external client groups
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple projects and competing deadlines

Conditions of Employment:

  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent). Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with the City of Edmonton’s policy

Work Environment:

  • Note: This position  may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement  with the  flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52. 
  • This position requires the ability to attend events during evenings and weekends.
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary Range: $34.138 - $42.915 (Hourly) $71,279.98 - $89,606.69 (Annually)
